Glass Igloos and Northern Lights

Posted by on September 20, 2011

I have never been able to see the appeal of the ice hotel.  It just looks cold and dark to me.  This however, is something I can totally get excited about.

These are little glass igloos with a small bathroom and a luxury bed, so you can sleep out under the northern lights (and a million stars). According to the Kakslauttanen Hotel website each igloo is “built from a special thermal glass so the temperature inside the igloo always stays at a normal level.  It also prevents the glass from not getting white frosted, hence keeping the view clear even when the temperature outside drops to under -30°C. ”  I am wondering what they consider a normal level; probably still pretty chilly for me.  Igloo Village starts its season each year between December and January, depending on the weather conditions, and stays open until the end of April.

I have always wanted to watch a really spectacular display of the Northern Lights.  At my friend’s wedding in Wisconsin I saw a pale, small display (it was still pretty cool), but it can be so much cooler.  I always thought it would be in Canada, but Finland would be awesome too!
