Phantom Limb

These amazing lighter-than-air pieces are by Motohiko Odani a well known Japanese Sculptor.  This exhibit, Phantom Limb, was at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo last winter.

Looking at these two photos, it strikes me how much our perception of an instillation changes with the point of view.  The first image looks open, you can see each piece as a separate element, but in the second photo everything crowds together and blends into one.

I am totally showing my age on this one, but the first thing I thought of when I saw these photos was The Last Unicorn.  That was the first movie that made me cry.  I was at a friend’s house, and I was inconsolable.  I had no idea that a movie could bring out that much emotion, so I was as surprised at my tears as anyone.  My friend’s mother was completely flummoxed.  I was a pretty stoic little kid, up until I was a mess about the unicorns returning from the sea…
