One of the most fascinating Christmas decorations that my mother had in the late 70s, was a Mr and Mrs Claus set made from folded newspaper and painted red. I remember prying apart their layers to try to read what was written on the paper. We probably still have them, I might see them in a week or so. Their cute little heads balanced on a pyramid of newsprint, watching over the celebrations.
Those decorations were the first thing I thought of when I saw these book sculptures by Bronia Sawyer. She uses the same folded paper technique, but her sculptures are graceful and elegant. She often uses discarded dictionaries, which makes me smile. All the words in the language, on these pages that have now become part of something visually stunning. In her artist statement Bronia says that she is interested in organized chaos. I suppose I am as well.
