In grad school, I had the pleasure of designing a Rube Goldberg machine. However, it was part of a play so, my machine did not have to actually work. It only had to look like it was working. I had lots of spinning cogs, a kicking boot, and a whole bunch of bicycle wheels. It is one of the funnest things I have ever designed.
Joseph Herscher is a master of the real, working Rube Goldberg machine.
In his latest video taking a sip of coffee starts a chain reaction that eventually (19 steps later) turns the page of his paper – but just the once. To turn the next page would require an enormous reset.
