I have a fondness for the juxtaposition of architecture and contemporary art installations. This is a rather unassuming bridge in Rouen, France.
Artist Arne Quinze added a canopy of orange and white lumber, and that upgraded the bridge from utilitarian to fantastic.
From a distance the canopy looks like a solid piece, but up close you can see the individual bits in a seemingly chaotic assemblage.
Quinze has made several pieces like this, his stated goal is to bring people together in a public space to generate social interaction. From his website:
“Each installation brings a new spirit to its surrounding environment, a new atmosphere so that inhabitants sense that there’s a changing, dynamic mood.”
I want to hang out there.
