I was a teenager the first time I saw fireflies. They are not common on the plains of Colorado, but one summer in a little valley, my dad found a small group of them. It was akin to seeing the ocean for the first time, something you had heard about all your life but have never experienced. That little group of insects made the night seem magical.
Bruce Monro has been creating that same magical feeling with his work for years. This summer he has his first one-man show at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.
The show is pretty spectacular. It is spread out over 23 acres and consists of eight large outdoor installations, and three indoor works.
Throughout the exhibit there is emphasis on low energy lighting and recycled (like the CDs in the lake) and reused materials.
